Of all the health habits I’ve tried, this is the one I resisted taking seriously the longest, precisely because it’s so boring. Drink more water. Everyone says it. I assumed I was fine.
I wasn’t. Once I started actually paying attention, I realized I often mistook thirst for hunger or fatigue. That mid-afternoon crash I blamed on my schedule? Sometimes it was just mild dehydration. The headaches I reached for pills to fix? Occasionally the same story.
I didn’t count ounces or download an app with a chirping reminder. What worked was making water easy and visible. I kept a bottle on my desk and a glass by the sink, and I drank a full glass first thing in the morning before coffee. When water is right in front of me, I drink it almost without thinking.
I also learned that hydration isn’t only about plain water. Herbal teas count, and foods like cucumbers, oranges, and soups contribute too. That took the pressure off forcing down glass after glass.
The effects weren’t flashy, but they were real: steadier energy, fewer headaches, clearer thinking in the afternoon. I know this is the least exciting advice on my blog. But sometimes the most overlooked habits are the ones with the best return, and this one costs almost nothing. If you try one small thing this week, let it be a glass of water within reach.
