The Winter I Finally Took Vitamin D Seriously

Every winter I’d feel it — a low, gray heaviness that I chalked up to short days and bad weather. It wasn’t until a routine blood test came back that I learned my vitamin D was genuinely low. Suddenly that winter slump had a possible explanation.

Vitamin D turns out to be involved in a lot: bone health, immune function, and even mood. Our bodies make it from sunlight, which is wonderful in summer but a real problem when you live somewhere with long, dark winters and spend most daylight hours indoors.

I did two things. First, I got outside more — even a short midday walk when the sun was out made a difference to how I felt. Second, after talking with my doctor, I started a supplement through the darker months. The blood test was key; it told me I actually needed it rather than guessing.

I want to be careful here, because vitamin D is fat-soluble and it is possible to take too much. This is genuinely a case where testing and a doctor’s guidance matter — I’m sharing what worked for me, not a dosage for everyone.

The change was gentle but real. The next winter didn’t feel quite so heavy. I still get the short days and the gray skies, but I no longer feel like I’m dragging myself through them. Sometimes the fix isn’t willpower or a new routine — it’s simply giving your body something it was quietly missing.
